What Happened to Penance?

(Photo©Michael Seagriff)

The message of our Lady at Lourdes was: Do penance; the same words were repeated at Fatima: Do penance.  But how often is penance preached?  The current tendency is rather to downgrade the need for penance, to reduce the severity of the fasts and the number of days of obligatory fasting.  To make religion comfortable, however, is enough to make the Angel cry out again to any church like Ephesus: Repent and go back to the old ways (Revelation 2: 5).

A Remedy For Sin

As sin abounds in the human race, man needs a remedy for it. But no one can provide this remedy, except God alone, Who is able not only to move man’s will to good, so as to bring him back to the right order, but also to forgive the offense committed against Him; since an offense is not forgiven except by the person offended.    St. Thomas Aquinas

Remember The Forgotten Souls in Purgatory

(Image Source: Wikimedia Commons) The suffering souls in purgatory are powerless to help themselves, and therefore we should from charity help them. For we would be considered exceedingly hard-hearted who, if he could, would not assist his own brother were he in a city prison; and therefore a great deal more hard-hearted are we if we do not help our friends in purgatory; especially since no earthly punishment can be compared to theirs in any way.  St. Thomas Aquinas, O.P.
