I may think of hell as threefold: hell is
torment of fire and other pains of sense in the company of demons and the
damned; hell is the loss of God which is the greatest pain of hell; and hell is
despair that will never end…Through pious meditation I must descend into hell
while I live that I may not have to descend into it when I die.
