For whosoever
goes frequently in spirit during life to the gates of hell, will not at death
easily descend into hell; because meditation of this nature, that is, frequent
and devout meditation, prevents us from sinning and withdraws us from hell. For
since we see that men of the world refrain from committing evil deeds, because of temporal
punishment, therefore, by so much the more should we fear and refrain from
mortal sin, because of the punishment of hell, which is more terrible in regard
to its duration, severity and variety.
